Start System Restore from a command prompt
You can start System Restore from a command prompt window if you can’t start your computer in any mode other than safe mode with command prompt.
You may also launch the utility from a standard command prompt or from the standard Run dialog command. The executable name for the utility is rstrui.exe.
Commands to run system restore from a real mode prompt are detailed below.
1. Start your computer in safe mode with command prompt or…
a. Open an elevated command prompt window use the following command: C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:mymachine\administrator cmd
b. Enter the password for the Admin account to access the elevated prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
a. If starting System Restore from a eleveted window prompt the syntax is as follows: C:\Windows\system32>start rstrui.exe
Note: If you use System Restore when the computer is in safe mode, you can’t undo the restore operation. However, you can run System Restore again and choose a different restore point if one exists.
